The Canary Islands Guide is very much a guide for tourists rather than a pilot book, but as such it has the information for a touring yachtsman to enjoy these islands.
For such a small country The Netherlands has an amazing 6,000km of navigable waterways and there is something there for everyone.
The revised edition of the Arctic and Northern Waters Pilot is a compelling volume that takes the reader into waters that few will travel, for those who go there it is essential reading.

This is the 7th edition of this well-known and popular book. There is much that is new in this edition, all beautifully explored and explained.

In the Spring 2025 edition of Tidings I ended my review of David’s first novel with the hope that we would read more. Now, with Out of the Depths, that wish has come true and a second delightful read it most certainly is. As before, it is sometimes (and cleverly) difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Once again David has brought together a mix of personalities, ages and experiences, the catalyst being the arrival in Chatham, in May 1940, of a ‘shot up’ and bombed old paddle-steamer crammed with Jewish refugees. There are, too, relevant scenes of Dunkirk and even a dinner party in HMS Victory’s ‘great cabin’.
The story, in effect a continuation of A Flower in Winter, is largely set in West Cornwall where the eclectic characters, varied nationalities and diverse religions lead to, among others, a beautifully crafted love story supported by atmospheric prose and vividly detailed descriptions of his beloved west Cornwall. Throughout, and I am purposely avoiding any hint at the plot lines which could so easily apply to today as well as those of wartime Britain, there is immense sadness and great joy across very believable players. This all makes Out of the Depths a moving, unusual and unique story. Indeed one that will often require much thought before the reader can move on to the next page.
I enjoyed David’s second book and, if I may, must repeat myself by declaring that I am delighted to see that this is now the second of a trilogy. This is very good news indeed.
